Alas, I did not have Internet at this period in my life, and I could not return the discs at the store. (I also have a personal vendetta against steam from when I bought disc skyrim and, while the data was all on the discs, it demanded I download from steam. It also creeps me out when someone somewhere has my personal information, and there are numerous tales of people buying games they never play because they're so cheap on steam. (And if I need to reinstall I don't have to hog the Internet, I can just pop the discs back in.) I can just hit play without it and I don't have to worry about having Internet, or steam having troubles with obse, or authentication.
I find steam an all around bother to use. Then I remembered why it had been on the shelf for so long, and I went back to the cracked exe. And it kept bothering me about keeping the disc in to play it and it made painful disc spinning sounds every time I started the computer. I played it for several years and finally one day while I was going through my bookshelf I was like "wtf, I have pc oblivion why have I not used it?" So I popped the disc in. "Cracked" oblivion works perfectly fine, even with hundreds of mods, obse, everything.
